Efficient Step by Step Instructions to Repairing Water Damaged Ceilings and Walls
Here are the before and after water damage repair pictures.

It's a bit of an illusion but this is an area of a ceiling damaged by a leaky pipe. Obviously, the first to do in a case like this is to call a plumber to fix the leak. Then comes a very small but often challenging little repair. Here's how we do it.
The Three Step Approach to Wall and Ceiling Water Damage Repair
Step 1 - Remove Tape
- using a drywall knife, cut along the tape (in this case paper tape in a bulkhead corner) to where the tape is still completely adhered to the panel.
- cut each end of the loose tape and peel that piece out.
- scrape loose paint and primer around the damaged area
- use a blow dryer to ensure all moisture is in fact removed from the area
Step 2 - Replace Tape
- try to replace damaged tape with original used: paper or fiber tape
- cut a piece of tape to loosely fit inside the open area
- thickly and completely cover the damaged area with drywall compound, 90, Durabond, Polyfilla or Plaster of Paris
- immediately position new tape
- squeeze out excess compound with putty knife
- set to dry completely
- apply additional coats as necessary (usually one)
Step 2 - Refinish Damaged Area
- set to dry then lightly sand area smooth with a hand sander
- prime entire area using a roller and set to dry completely
- paint area with roller at least two coats
